The car was revised several times during the years to follow, resulting in three different styles later named the Series I (1968-1973), Series II (1973-1979) and Series III (1979-1986). The new cars introduced in 1986 were also marketed by Jaguar as "XJ6" but true Jaguar enthusiasts refer to them by their Jaguar internal designation of XJ40. In 1994 yet another update was introduced, this car was (and still is) marketed as the "XJ6" but again enthusiasts refer to it by it's Jaguar internal designation of X300. To add to this confusion the Series III bodyshell actually lived on until 1992 in twelve cylinder versions of both Jaguars and Daimlers as the XJ12 and Double Six, respectively. Please note that this document only deals with the XJ6 model, all the different series were also available in a twelve cylinder version called the XJ12. The Series I: The Series I was an immediate success. Jaguar had problems meeting demand, even journalists had problems getting a car to test drive. The Series I XJ6 was delivered with the following engines and transmissions:

Only minor changes were made to the Series II cars which were introduced in 1973. The bumpers were raised slightly to meet pending US regulations, the front end was subtly revised and some minor technical improvements were made. The big news, of course, was the introduction of the short-lived two door pillarless coupe (2dht) (1975-1977). The Series II XJ6 was delivered with the following engines and transmissions:

4 speed manual with optional overdrive At the beginning of the eighties Jaguar felt that something had to be done about the aging XJ6 and hired the noted Italian stylist Pininfarina. The result was again a subtle restyling, this time going a bit further than the previous remake. In addition to external changes the car also got fuel injection as standard equipment along with other technical improvements. The Series III XJ6 was delivered with the following engines and transmissions:
